Paul Sanders has 35 years of experience as a consultant in the construction industry, primarily in the field of bridge engineering. He joined Rendel in 2024 as the Business Unit Director for Infrastructure responsible for identifying and pursuing new projects, aligning with partners and delivery of projects.
Prior to joining Rendel, Paul led a number of joint ventures, most notably, he led a four-way joint venture, as Project Director to deliver the concept and detailed design of the Mersey Gateway project, under a DBFO scheme and opened in 2017 which won the IABSE Outstanding Structure Award for 2019.
On sustainability, he is passionate about the need to reduce embodied carbon in the construction industry in the drive towards Net Zero. This is demonstrated through a series of projects that have pushed boundaries in terms of reducing material consumption. He led social value delivery on behalf of the Mersey Design Joint Venture.
His portfolio of projects includes work on a number of listed bridges including Hammersmith Bridge, where he led the 2020 development of the concept for the double deck temporary bridge which facilitates an innovative concept to completely rehabilitate the Grade II * Listed bridge. Earlier in his career with High Point Rendel, he was the Lead Engineer for the widening of Songsu Bridge and also worked on the Strengthening and Refurbishment of Westminster Bridge.
Besides being a Fellow of the Institution of Civil Engineers (FICE) since 2015, he has sponsored around 15 engineers towards achieving Chartered Engineer status with the ICE. In addition, he is a Chartered Member of Engineers Australia. In recognition of his achievements, he was awarded the International Association of Bridge and Structural Engineers (IABSE) Milne Medal in 2022 – for “an individual engineer for excellence in structural design, both in the overall concept and in the attention to detail in their work”.
He has authored and co-authored a number of papers published in journals and has presented at conferences. He was lead author for two separate ICE Bridge Journal papers that won awards for the best paper published by the Institution of Civil Engineers on bridges in 2006 & 2011.
