Rendel is delighted with the news that the Padma Multipurpose Bridge has received the IABSE Award for International Community Development.
Rendel’s first involvement in the project dates back to the pre-feasibility study which it completed in 2000. Key challenges for the Padma Bridge included piles driven over 120m into the ground and designing for scour channels over 50m deep.
Following Rendel’s earlier role it was appointed as the Management Support Consultancy that also provided technical support to the Bangladesh Bridge Authority and wider project team from 2016-2022. As part of this role, Rendel assisted with resolution of complex foundation challenges early in the project and then redesigned critical elements of the bridge deck to enable construction to be accelerated.
This prestigious IABSE award recognises the significant contribution of this major infrastructure project towards the development of Bangladesh. It is already estimated that the bridge will increase Bangladesh’s GDP by as much as 2%. In addition, the bridge provides a faster and safer crossing of the 6km wide Padma river, reducing pollution and connecting communities and businesses.
